Lesson 9 - Backhand_serve – description
Learning how to serve with a backhand is an important skill for kids starting out in table tennis. The serve is the starting point of every point, and it's essential to understand the proper technique and rules to serve effectively. To begin, kids should stand with their feet shoulder-width apart, facing the table. They should hold the racket comfortably in their hand, with a grip that feels natural to them.
When serving with a backhand, kids should start by positioning themselves slightly to the side of the table, with their non-racket hand and the ball behind the end line. They should hold the ball in their non-racket hand and toss it vertically into the air. As the ball descends, kids should use their racket to make contact with the ball on its way down, just above the table surface.
They should focus on generating spin and accuracy, aiming to keep the serve low over the net and place it in the desired location on the opponent's side of the table. During the backhand serve, kids can experiment with different types of spins, such as backspin or sidespin, to make the serve more challenging for their opponents. It's important to maintain a relaxed wrist and a smooth motion while making contact with the ball. Kids should be aware of the rules related to serving, including keeping their free hand and the ball behind the end line, tossing the ball vertically, and not moving it horizontally before hitting it.
A coach or instructor can provide guidance on proper serving technique and explain the rules in detail. Regular practice of serving with a backhand will help kids develop consistency, control, and accuracy. They can experiment with different serves, strategies, and placements to keep their opponents guessing and gain an advantage in the game.
Encourage kids to stay focused, have fun, and maintain good sportsmanship while serving. Remind them that serving is an essential part of the game and a skill that can be improved with practice and determination. With time and effort, they will become more proficient in serving with a backhand and enhance their overall table tennis skills.
